Holiday Tasks

False Plateau:
This is when the audience are lulled into a false sense of security. Therefore viewers are deliberately made to think that we should be expecting something shocking to happen, but it does not happen so they are then made to relax. When audience is in a state of relaxation they are then shocked by something they were not expecting.
Examples of False Plateau:
The Orphan- There are a few examples of False Plateau in The Orphan. In the following video when the mum think they are safe, the audience also thinks the characters are not in danger anymore, so they are relaxed, then something shocking happens; it was not expected.

Bomb Theory:-Alfred Hitchcock
This theory explains that audiences are more engaged with a film because they know more than the characters on screen. This is illustrated when for example there is a bomb under a table, and the audience knows about it, but on the other hand the characters on screen do not know about it.
Examples of The Bomb Theory:
Vertigo- We see the man running after the woman, struggling to get up the stairs. The audience, know that it's the only way he can discover the true events of that day in which the wife's dead body was thrown off. the man has a theory but he wants the woman to confess.

Black Swan
The black swan movie contains a lot of suspense and quite a few 'bomb theory' effects . The fact that the main character of the film is a potential ballerina makes the story more interesting because she is slowly turning into a black swan without noticing, and for the final show which she dances as both, black ad white swans. In  her career she sees the dark side of 'herself' through different stages as she turns into a swan. This movie is about fear of penetration, fear of your body, fear of being supplanted in the affections of a powerful man, love of perfection, love of dance, and passionate and overwhelming hatred of your mother.
