False Plateau
Is when the audience is brought into a false sense of security where they thing something is going to happen. This makes the audience tense and is then relieved after becoming relaxed they are then shocked this usually inflicts jumping reaction on the audience.

Bomb Theory
This is when the audience knows more then the characters which makes them more engaged into the film. This usually causes the audience to scream or shout out as they want to warn the character about the danger.

Both of these techniques are used in the film The Step Father
This film is about a man who meets women in shopping centres and acts out to be a very kind friendly person. The mother then starts liking the man and invites the man over. He then makes his way into the family and for a while acts out to be a great person and a good member of the family. This makes the members of the family let down there guard then after a while he murders the family and leaves without a being caught changing his identity and location and searching for new victims.

Below is an example of False Plateau used in the film Step Father.
The old women is looking for her cat in the cupboard which makes the audience think that the step father is in the cupboard. This makes the audience tense when then is relieved when the cat jumps out of the cupboard. The audience is then relaxed until the cupboard door is shut and the step father appears shocking the audience.

Bomb theory in Step Father
The dad is walking towards the kitchen where the step father is waiting to hit him. This causes the effect of bomb theory as the audience knows that he is going to kill him if he walks into the kithcen whereas the dad does not know this. The audience at this point will be like "dont go in there".
