Question 7

Looking back at your prelim task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Prelim

Research and planning
Given scenario and given equipment we had a short time to plan. quick storyboard
Mise on scene we were given an room for our setting and had two props drugs and phone- used corridor for the beginning setting.

Camera
We used the JVC camcorders and we had an tripod. We learnt about the 180 % rule, which we stuck by. We used over the shoulder shots. Wide, close up and tracking.

Editing- we done a quick edit we just added together the clips we fort looked best. No effects were added. We did not add in any titles into our prelim.

Sound
For sound we stuck with the sound that was recorded with filming. Only added a few sound effects such as door banging and ring tone.

Resolved

We were given a week to plan our opening. This included many ideas of what we wanted our film to be about. We had to produce a storyboard and then make a detailed storyboard. We had to script out what dialogue we wanted. Had to pre book the equipment we needed.

Mise on scene
We had to find perfect locations for our film. This included a friend’s house, which we had to travel to out of school time. Had to book the basement of the college were we needed and learnt about producing a risk assessment. We had to think about make up and costume. We had to dress up for the scenes in different costumes. We had to gather our props, which was weapons and string.

Lighting – we had to position it properly. In the basement scene we needed it to be dark and have a spot light, which was the dado light to add effect. We learnt how to position light for it to appear good on the camera and in final cut pro

Editing- we used final cut pro to edit. When doing this I learnt how to add title to my opening and how to make it look effective. I learnt how to add effect such as slow motion. An effect to show it’s a flashback. We spent along time on editing this clip to perfection.

Sound
Used soundtrack pro to edit sound. I learnt how to adjust the original sound and then add in sound effects such as hitting and walking.

Camera angles
Several cameras angle wide; close up, medium, over the shoulder. Used match cuts and stuck with the 180% rule.

We improved teamwork skills, as the whole production was group work. Also improved our communication skills and organisation, as we had to stick to deadlines and stick with our production schedule. Also improved our skills on final cut and sound track pro.

Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

A convention of film openings is an order of the way the film is introduced to the audience. It often contains credits, Production Company and a way to introduce the main characters.

The order of most film openings would be as the following:
1.Title
2.We see the production and film company logos
3.List of credits directors and actor’s
4.Establishing shots
5.Shots to show location for example many shots at beginning of       film show a sky view of a cityscape.
6.Introducing the main characters

And classic opening would be:
Begin with long opening credits then:
1.City scape
2.Close up t in on one of the buildings
3.Close up of a window
4.Going into the room
5.Meet the characters

A title sequence is where the cast and crew involved in the production are listed. These usually come on one by one at a constant pace throughout the opening of the film. They are presented in different fonts and colours and some might also have effects.

We decided to go with the normal opening but to do a few sequences differently. The real media opening convention we decide to follow was step father an thriller film about a physco killer which pretends to be an nice person and ends up killing the family he slyly makes his way into. Our film and stepfather are both narrative openings. It tells the audience a little about the film.

Here is our opening compared to the stepfather which I cut up to show certain parts of the titles and convention.

As you can see from the short clip that there was some similarities in the sequence between both and differences.

Q3: Evaluation: Media institution and distribution.

This is an interview between a chat show host and a member of the production crew. In it it talks about how we chose the production companies, what companies we used and why.

Above: these are distribution and production companies that regularly create and distribute thriller films.

We researched into these companies and found that twisted pictures was the smallest of private companies that regularly work on thriller films such as saw. we thought that as a film that has similar attributes to the film saw, it would be best suited for our opening sequence.

We also used the candi production ident as the film is a small budjet film with a local release which again is quite small so dosent require a huge budjet for advertising and distribution.

FINAL CUT -RESOLVED

This is the official film opening of 'Resolved'

Editing Process - Final Sound Additions

Shown above is the final sound editing that we put on our final film opening. We had some problems in this area while we were putting the final touches on our film but we were able to solve them and put the sound on our film.

Shown above is a screenshot of the music we downloaded from youtube that we wanted to use. Out of all of the listed soundtracks, we decided which one out of all of them that we liked the most and used it for our film opening.

Evidence of Non-Copyright

Below are screen shots of evidence that we collected off YouTube that the sound we used for our film opening wasn't copyrighted.

The screen shots show conversations that the owner of the sound had with other youtube users, saying that it was alright for them to use his sound.

Risk Assessment

As one part of our scenes was filmed in the storage room of CNI we had to create an risk assessment because there are many risks when filming down there.

Additional Story Board

As shown below, the last two storyboards of our film which we improvised during one of our filming sessions to add into our film opening.
The two story boards, shown below, are of the contract scene where the murderer and the victim (the dad) were signing the contract.
